Because emotions olny take control over us when we resist it or hold on to them and to the (negative) story we create about it in our heads. Then, we are trapped in a thinking-emotion loop where the thought triggers the emotion and the emotion triggers the thought and so on. If we don't fire the emotion with the story in our heads they, it naturally just passes away after 3-5 minutes.
